Best Schools Premier Destination: Airborne Kite Centres, East Africa – Zanzibar Island base.
Location:
Paje, south-east coast of Zanzibar island, Tanzania.
At Airborne we believe an exhilarating kiteboarding holiday is the product of a perfect location, reliable winds and all the facilities you need to enjoy them…
All Airborne Kite Centres are located on pristine stretches of kiteboarding coastline. These locations have been carefully chosen due to the many desirable qualities these stretches of coastline have to offer, this includes not only great, consistent winds for 9 months of the year but also pristine beaches and ideal conditions all-round!
The North Easterly winds, known as The Kaskazi winds blow from December – March/April.
The South Easterly Kusi winds kick in for the months of May – October.
In Kenya, we are located on the world class Nyali Beach. Awesome waves on and beyond the reef and flat waters in the protected tropical lagoon are just a couple of the reasons this beach has in recent years started to gain international recognition as a world class kite-surfing location.
In Tanzania, we have newly established in Paje, on the south-east coast of stunning Zanzibar Island. This is a kitesurfing goldmine destination just waiting to explode! Virtually untouched crystal clear tropical waters, lagoons, sandbanks, islands and bays. Flat calm protected lagoons and great waves out on and beyond the reef! What more could you want?!
Best time of year to come:
● We have two main seasons on Zanzibar Island.
● Our shorter season from mid December until March and the longer season from beginning of June until October.
● Mid seasons are generally best with most reliable and consistent winds.
● Can also expect some great waves (Reef breaks) in our longer season during July to September.
How to get there?
Zanzibar island has an International Airport just out of Stonetown. We are located in Paje village, on the more exposed side, on the south-east coast of the island. Taxi transfers across from the airport take approx 45min.
Accommodation info:
Accommodation in Paje is idyllic with a number of small guesthouses and smaller more exclusive resorts. Airborne organises various accommodation options to suit most budgets. All accommodation options we work with are located within a few minutes walk of the centre. Resort and Guesthouse are right next door to the centre.
About lessons:
Airborne Kite Centres are International Kiteboarding Organization (IKO) affiliated schools and centres.
All levels of kite instruction are available with IKO courses ranging from complete beginner right up to instructor level as well as wave riding and advanced level coaching.
What sizes of kites and gear to bring:
Ideally you should have a couple of kites to maximise your time on the water as conditions do vary however as a general guideline (For an average person weighing around 80kg) having a range between a 9m to a 12m kite should get you out on the water most days.
What is there to do if no wind:
Zanzibar island is a tropical paradise ‘spice’ island with a lot of history, culture and natural attractions so there are numerous activities to keep you entertained should you come about some no wind days. Dolphin tours, snorkelling and scuba diving are all on offer, as well as spice tours, Jozani forest and Stonetown tours, not to mention full day idyllic outer sandbank excursions that we offer that include drinks and an amazing BBQ seafood buffet.
Tips on culture or weather preparedness:
The Zanzibari people are primarily Muslim so full clothing (Especially for women) within the Villages and in Stonetown is encouraged out of respect to the local culture and religion.
